Elizabeth & Amber Tournament success at the Kent Futures

A few of our ESJBA juniors take extra training with Kent based club AIT, which allows them to gain entry into Kent competitions. With very few opportunities in Sussex this has been a great chance for these youngsters to improve their skills.

Pictured at the recent Kent Futures competition are Amber Seymour (with partner Millie Mugridge) won gold in both the u-16 singles and doubles; and Elisabeth Hutchinson, (Sussex County Junior), won gold in the u-14 doubles and silver in the u-14 singles.

Well done Amber and Elizabeth

Masters Tournament

Chairman, William Brown and his Middlesex partner, ceeded #2, just missed out at both the Kent Gold in Gillingham, and at the Cumbrian Masters in Carlisle, with Lancastrian partner, finishing third in both, in the O70’s Mens Doubles. At the Northumberland Masters at Newcastle they managed to pick up the Runners Up prize. Picture shows William & Peter at the Northumberland Masters Tournament. William also helped the Sussex O70’s team beat Kent in the County League, taking a decisive Mixed Doubles game with his partner Pam from Hastings.

Win for Blake

At the recent Sussex County Badminton Junior Restricted Championships, U12 Squad player Blake Hawkins had another excellent tournament by fighting his way through the main draw, winning 5 matches on route to the finals. Unfortunately, despite a very hard fought finals, he came out as Runner Up. With his former ESJBA Squad partner, Tejas got through the main draw but got knocked out in the semi-finals. This is the first year in the County Squad for Blake and already he is making his mark. Well done Blake.

Tejas & Blake take title

This was the first tournament for both of our young players, so in at the deep end. SCB ran The Rising Stars Tournament at Haywards Heath on the 15th May. Tejas & Blake won all their games to the final taking the U11 Winners Award. Tejas also picked up the Runners Up medal for the Boys U11 singles-which he fought a close battle against his partner Blake, in the semi-finals , which he finally won 21-18.’

Compliments on our players and their Squad shirts were received from both the Sussex County Badminton Committee and other parents throughout the day.

Alumini Day

A ‘friendly’ match day was arranged at our Hastings venue between former Squad players and our current  older squad.  The players taking part were Jessica Newberry, Georgia Thomas, Callum Napier, Sahara Moshref, Ryan Burdett, Tom Napier, Harvey James, Nithika Biyanwila, Matthew Brand, Curtis Lynam and Dylan Taylor and Adam Newberry.  There were hard fought games but the  Alumni team managed to take a convincing 18-10 win overall.  As this was  such a great day, we will be looking to add this to our annual calendar of events in the future.

Middlesex Masters

ESJBA Chairman William & partner Richard get second Runners Up medals at the Middlesex masters in February. This was a combined age group of O60-70’s, so an excellent effort.

Eastbourne Tournament

ESJBA-Hasting’s Squad players enter the Eastbourne Tournament with Taegan Byroo and Assistant Coach, Adam Newberry taking the Winners trophy in the Group B Men’s Doubles

070’s MD Winners and Runners UP. (William -2nd L, and his partner Richard-far right)

Our Chairman, and former Sussex O65’s Captain, William Brown and his partner Richard Fischer (Middlesex) reached the finals of the 070’s MD in the Kent Gold Tournament at the weekend. This was the first National event of the year with players from all over England and an invited group from Holland. The pair won their group with two hard fought three enders and progressed through to the semi’s taking three respected England players out on route. Unfortunately they weren’t able to sustain their momentum and lost in the finals to a pair from Leicester & Surrey.

National Champion and Hastings coach, Cathy Bargh once more won her age group in both Singles and Doubles.

ESJBA Team Challenge Event – Sunday 28 th April 2019

This event was organised as a 4-way team competition for an u17 age group and is styled on the ex-NBL competition where each team of 6 (3 boys and 3 girls) plays one match against the other 3 teams. The result of the match is decided as the best of 5 rubbers – a boy’s and girl’s singles, a mixed doubles and a boy’s and girl’s doubles; each rubber is played as the best of 3 short games. To increase the tension the teams can use a “power play” shuttle in each rubber to claim 2 points if they win a chosen point.

Badminton clubs from across Sussex were invited and teams from ESJBA, Worthing, Felbridge and St Johns (Tunbridge Wells) entered. The event as always provided some exciting and competitive team badminton and this year was no different. ESJBA proved a little too strong for the other teams; however the game against the runners-up Worthing Juniors was very close with 4 of the 5 rubbers going to a deciding 3 rd game!

A special thanks to the coaches and helpers from Worthing Juniors, St Johns Junior BC and Felbridge Junior BC for their help on the day and making the event so enjoyable for the players involved. Any clubs wishing to take part please contact us for details.

Christmas Fun Day

Over 60 players, parents and friends joined our Annual Christmas fun Day at Heathfield Leisure Centre at the weekend. The day started with everyone being paired up with either their mum, dad or friend and placed in strength related groups. Each group had to play against all the other pairs in their group to determine the winners. After two hours of entertaining badminton, we got five winning pairs and runner’s ups. In some of the games there appeared to be more determination from the parents than their siblings!

Presentations were made to all the winners and also additional prizes were made to the parent and player with the most festive outfits. This was a strongly contested event as many had made a real effort to impress. The final choices and prizes were given to Donna Lynam (parent) and Georgia Thomas (player). The morning concluded with refreshments provided by the Association where parents/players and coaches were able to mix and discuss the merits of their performances.

This was possibly our most successful Christmas Fun Day to date and was orchestrated mainly by Eastbourne Coach, Martin Bilton for managing the games and Heathfield Coach, Nick Saunders, for organising the refreshments on the day.

15th Annual Championships-Results

Sunday 18th saw the 15th Annual East Sussex Junior Championships. Originally ran in March each year, the tournament moved to November to avoid the busy calendar of the new year. This is the third one held at Hailsham Community College, with its excellent facilities especially the viewing gallery for parents. This event is aimed at those players who are not selected for the County teams. Once more the tournament ran to a very tight schedule, finishing fifteen minutes ahead of time due to some cancelled games down to injuries. We had a total of 43 entrants from across East Sussex. 32/11 boys/girls. A total of 119 games were played over eight hours.

The morning session was for the U11 & U13 age groups plus an U18 Mixed Doubles group. In the afternoon it was the turn of the U15 and U18 age groups. The results were that 40 out of 46 of the trophies were taken by players from the ESJBA squads. Again there was a much smaller entry in the younger age groups with girls only playing in the U11 Unisex Singles. This highlights the enormous shortage of girls playing the sport

Presentations were made by William Brown, Chairman of East Sussex Badminton.

Winners and runner-ups for the tournament were-

Annual Xmas ‘Fun-Day’ 2017

On Sunday morning 17th December, over 60 players including parents swooped into the Heathfield Leisure Centre for our annual Pre-Christmas ‘fun-day’.  Teams comprised of player and parent or coach and were formed into four groups, each having to play everyone in their group with an overall group winner.  We saw parents, grandparents, ex-members and even friends of the players taking part and thoroughly enjoying a morning of mixed play.  Games were very competitive – mostly from the parents, and there was an abundance of seasonal jumpers and headgear supported by all.

Presentations were made by William Brown, Chairman of the Association, with refreshments organised by Anita Saunders, the treasurer, for all to partake and celebrate another good year with the coaches and committee members.

The pictures show some of the group winners alongside Best Christmas Jumper winners Elizabeth and Ryan.

Presentations were made by William Brown, Chairman of East Sussex Badminton.  This was also the fifth year of presenting the Kevin Marquiss Award, made in honour of Kevin, one of the Association’s founders who sadly passed away eight years ago with cancer.  This year it was awarded to Parisé Lockwood (Heathfield) one of our U18 players.  This award is made from all the squad coaches’ nominations, combining their players and based upon attendance, attitude, ability and personality.

We also saw the return of Dhanush Thiagaraj from Stonecross, for the second year, who also first appeared in 2011 but ‘missed out’ for two years due to his selection into the County Squads.

Christmas Fun-Day 2016

With our annual organiser, Martin lying on a beach in sunnier climes, the task of organising this year’s event was taken on by former Chairman, Bruce and assistant coach, Rosa. Once more the turnout was excellent with over 30, players and parents taking part, alongside coaches and committee members.

Group winners were:  Curtis + Dad (Stuart) Photo-bombed by younger brother; Lekham + Dad; Pritvit + Dad; Bradley + Dad (Glenn)

Winners of the Christmas Jumpers were:-  Lara + Jack Hammond (Quite honestly it was Rosa’s own that was best). It was also birthdays for Alex Neesam + Curtis Lynam, so special cakes were presented to a round of choral greetings.

It was only last year that Rosa was a member of the U18 squad and already assisting at the other squads, this year she has been assisting Martin in Eastbourne and now becoming an active member of the committee with running our Christmas event. Well done Rosa.

2016 – Invitation Team Challenge

On Sunday 8th May we hosted the second Invitation Team Challenge competition. This was so successful last year that the response from other clubs meant that this year’s event hosted three other clubs alongside the Esjba teams.

The event was divided into two age groups, U11-13 and U15-17 with four teams in each. The games started off at a pace as two of the teams were involved last year and were well prepared for the format. The use of the ‘Power-play’ shuttle became evident by the active contributions from the team mangers/coaches. The introduction of the ‘Power Play’ shuttle was taken by all teams and for many made the deciding result of a match. The day ran to an extremely well calculated timescale, once more by Eastbourne Coach, Martin Bilton and finishing 15 minutes ahead of schedule. The finals’ places in both age groups were decided by the last games with each group going down to the wire with equal matches and a count back on games. The results for both groups were as follows:

U11-13’s 1st Lewes , 2nd ESJBA, 3rd Worthing, 4th St. Johns
U15-17’s 1st Lewes, 2nd St. Johns, 3rd ESJBA, 4th Worthing

The 11th East Sussex Junior Restricted Badminton Championships Results

Sunday 20th saw the 11th Annual East Sussex Junior Championships. For the third year the event was held at the 6-court University of Brighton Sports Centre, Falmer. This event is aimed at those players who are not selected for the County teams. Once more the tournament ran to a very tight schedule and managed to complete 15 minutes ahead of schedule. We had a total of 59 entrants from across East Sussex. 48/11 boys/girls. A total of 205 games were played over 7½ hours.

Presentations were made by William Brown, Chairman of East Sussex Badminton. This was also the fifth year of presenting the Kevin Marquiss Award, made in honour of Kevin, one of the Association’s founders who sadly passed away eight years ago with cancer. This year it was awarded to Cameron Matthews (Heathfield) one of our U13 players. This award is made from all the squad coaches’ nominations, combining their players and based upon attendance, attitude, ability and personality.

The morning session was for the U11 & U13 age groups plus an U17 Mixed doubles group. In the afternoon it was the turn of the U15 and U17 age groups.  The results were that 24 out of 56 of the trophies were taken by players from the ESJBA squads. This year there was a very large entry in the middle aged groups with a low number of U11’s coming through and an enormous lack of girls across the board.
